The Reaper concept is finally entering production. Well, the 2020 Chevy Silverado Reaper is not going to be exactly what we saw and expected five years ago. Back in 2014, General Motors introduced the new concept. The Reaper truck was intended to be the Ford Raptor’s rival. However, the off-road vehicle never entered production.
Now, it seems that Chevrolet is reviving the idea. The truck could arrive next year as the 2020 Chevy Silverado Reaper, or the Reaper concept could borrow few things to the Silverado ZR2 package. There are definitely few options and the stories are warming up together with the rumors about the Ram Rebel TRX, which should be the truck with the most power.
Chevy is testing Raptor’s rival
The new version of Chevrolet Silverado was spotted. It didn’t happen once. The company is serious about the rivalry with Ford F-150 Raptor. We can say – finally. According to rumors, the pickup arrives as Silverado ZR2. But, we don’t have a confirmation yet.
A few things are certain. One – GM needs to deliver the off-road performance-oriented truck. They are losing the pace in the full-size truck market (Ram 1500 achieved better sales in the first two quarters of 2019). Two –test mules are on the streets. The name of the truck is questionable, as well as the release date. The Reaper concept caused a lot of attention, but the company uses the ZR2 badge for similar vehicles in other segments.
2020 Chevy Silverado Reaper to debut next year, production starts in 2021
According to the latest rumors, the 2020 Chevy Silverado Reaper is having a premiere in the next 12 months. This is not official info, but the company wants to launch the off-road truck as soon as possible. GM wants to challenge Ford Raptor and they need to do it before the Ram Rebel makes it before Reaper.
Whatsoever, it is not so simple. The development takes a lot of time and funds. But, the main rivals are a big threat and that could speed up the entire process. However, the Reaper concept won’t turn into the production vehicle so soon. The process requires free capacities in factories and extra working power.
2020 Chevy Silverado Reaper Specs
Another big question is the drivetrain for the 2020 Chevy Silverado Reaper. The biggest GM’s unit currently in the lineup is a 6.2-liter V8 with 4220 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. Raptor is offering 450 hp and 500 lb-ft from its high-specs V6 unit. Ram Rebel is going to burst over 700 horsepower from its Hellcat 6.2-l supercharged V8 powertrain.
Some rumors say the Reaper is getting the drivetrain from the Camaro pony car. A 6.2-liter turbocharged unit could get up to 650 hp. Still, this is the far-fetched story, since the Camaro is using this tuning only for special versions. Anyway, we can expect big updates and more details in the next couple of months. The premiere of the Silverado Reaper is drawing a lot of interest both from enthusiasts and rivals.
