HiLux is the most popular Toyota’s truck in the world. Well, Tacoma is one of the best vehicles in the US. But, the mid-size model for the rest of the world carries a different name. And it is always one of the top sellers in every region – Europe, Asia, Australia. The durability of the 2020 Toyota HiLux is not in doubt. But, the company is going to introduce various new features for the next season. The safety suffers the most updates, while the drivetrain range remains the same.
HiLux is one of the longest nameplates in Toyota’s family. The first vehicle arrived in 1968. Now, more than 50 years later, the truck is in its eighth generation and it is ready for the first major update. The facelift refreshed the look in 2017, and now the bigger changes are happening inside the cabin. Under the hood will be many options, depending on the market where 2020 Toyota HiLux appears. Definitely, the most popular are 2.4 and 2.8 diesel engines, and a 2.7-liter petrol unit.
What’s New for 2020 Toyota HiLux?
The most upgrades for the 2020 Toyota HiLux are for the safety segment. From now on, the truck will get more features for the Toyota Safe Sense. Representatives confirmed this system will arrive with emergency braking (AEB), something we can see on Ford Ranger, HiLux’ main rival in most markets. Also, there are lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control as part of the safety system for the next edition.
That is not all since Toyota is preparing further upgrades for higher trim levels. Advanced automatic emergency braking and road signs, pedestrians, and cyclists detection are available. Forward collision alert will react and the AEB will start braking. The only unclear thing is which features will be standard for each trim level, and which are optional. And the bad news for 2020 Toyota HiLux is that truck is not getting Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. The Japanese company announced some of the vehicles will feature these phone connectivity options, and HiLux is not in this lineup for next season.
Total of seven engines is available for the new 2020 Toyota HiLux across the world. Four of them are diesel units. A couple of them has a double configuration. So, actually, that is six drivetrains. The most popular are the 2.4-liter and 2.8-l engines. The first one delivers 150 hp and 250-300 lb-ft of torque, while the larger mill adds 30 hp and creates 310-330 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual or automatic transmissions are options, with power delivery to two or four wheels. Other diesel engines are 2.5-liter (100 hp, 190 lb-ft) and a 3.0-liter (163 hp and 250-270 lb-ft, or 95 hp, 145 lb-ft configurations).
The 2020 Toyota HiLux will use the same 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine as its US sibling Tacoma. The drivetrain produces 160 hp and 180 lb-ft of twist. The largest power source in the squad is a 4.0-liter V6 with 235 hp and 280 pound-feet of torque. We can see this one under the hood of 4Runner SUV delivering 270 hp. The smallest unit is again petrol – a 2.0-liter four-pot with 140 hp and 135 lb-ft.
2020 Toyota HiLux Release Date
Announced changes for the 2020 Toyota HiLux became official in June. So, the new truck will be ready by the end of the year. We still don’t know if the Japanese company is going to make the USA debut with HiLux. It is not likely, but truckers in the largest market in the world are seeking the diesel engine. Instead of upgrading Tacoma, Toyota can deliver a ready unit – HiLux. Well, Ford brought Ranger from Australia, so the Japanese company could bring on the rivalry to the new market.
