The arrival of the Ford Ranger and big plans for its future should speed up the arrival of the next-gen truck by Blue Oval’s archrival. We already wrote about the 2022 season, but it seems like the 2021 Chevy Colorado is coming next year. The market dictates most things and the new pickup will arrive sooner than everyone expected, even the General Motors chiefs.
We don’t know what kind of changes the 2021 Chevy Colorado will introduce. Spy photos are not available yet. But, the pickup must respond to threats by Ford and Toyota. Meanwhile, FCA launched Jeep Gladiator, while they also plan to bring Dodge Dakota. The mid-size truck is currently the most popular segment in the USA, so that is another reason why changes are so big and important. Well, GM is also very active, since the company could bring back El Camino in the near future.
The current version of the Colorado mid-size pickup is one of the most versatile on the market with its range of engines. The company starts with the four-cylinder unit as the base one, while the more demanding truckers can squeeze 7,000 pounds of towing capacity from a larger V6 powertrain. Still, this is not the best output, since the class-leading towing capacity comes from a Duramax diesel.
A 2.5-liter four-pot engine can produce 200 hp and 190 lb-ft of torque. A 3.6-liter V6 is an upper offer which provides 310 hp and 275 pound-feet. Fuel economy is not taking a big hit unless you choose a ZR2 version for an off-road drive. Then be ready for a 4-mpg blow. A diesel unit is what makes Colorado so special. With 185 hp and 370 lb-ft of torque, it also delivers a better fuel economy.
When there is such a diesel engine, why would Chevrolet be worried about the sales? Emission standards are changing every now and then. Policies are becoming more strict and it is just a matter of time when these kinds of drivetrains will become history.
Instead, all companies are turning to greener sources of power. We could notice that GM is somehow behind the competition. The carmaker is yet to deliver a hybrid unit for smaller classes. But, the 2021 Chevy Colorado Hybrid could surprise all the fans and experts.
2021 Chevy Colorado ZR2
The 2021 Chevy Colorado ZR2 will wait for the news from Ford. This truck and Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro are offering great off-road skills, but both of them are afraid of Ranger Raptor and things this pickup can bring. Improvements are required for the ZR2 package, and recently we saw a new Bison version. Also, the company is preparing a similar model for its larger units, Silverado 1500 and HD lineup. Mid-Size Colorado could benefit from this as well.
2021 Chevy Colorado Release Date
We are waiting eagerly for the new Detroit Auto Show, being held in the summer of 2020. This is the first time the show is happening in the new format and organizers will do everything to bring the biggest names and debuts. The next-gen of the 2021 Chevy Colorado is definitely one of them.
