Ford Ranger’s return, Jeep Gladiator’s arrival, Toyota Tacoma’s changes, and the next-gen Chevy Colorado. These are things from the mid-size truck segment that bought our attention. All the way, one model seems like forgotten. But, it comes in style for the upcoming season. It is the 2021 Nissan Frontier. The company confirmed the next-gen model and we can’t wait to see if the rumors are based on true facts.
From what we can hear so far, the 2021 Nissan Frontier will look significantly different than its predecessors. Also, it will get a powerful engine that will burst 300 hp. The new generation of the mid-size pickup will refresh the model, but it seems like the truck is getting the same platform. On the other hand, some speculations say the Japanese carmaker is working on the new one and that Frontier is going to make some distance from its closest sibling, Navara.
2021 Nissan Frontier Specs
Under the hood of the current Frontier is a huge 4.0-l V6 engine. This is one of the biggest displacements in the segment. Well, the truck also offers a four-cylinder unit, but truckers are not taking this one too seriously. A V6 can produce 260 hp. The new 2021 Nissan Frontier will push the output to 300 hp. Chiefs announced plans, but it doesn’t mean we will see it in production. Also, the upcoming pickup will be able to tow up to 7,700 pounds. Jeep Gladiator and Chevy Colorado are at that level already, but these pickups are using diesel engines.
Outside the US, Frontier’s closest sibling Nissan Navara truck is more popular with a diesel engine. It is a 2.5-liter unit and its main advantages are durability and reliability. Well, it is almost certain that the 2021 Nissan Frontier is not getting a diesel mill. All companies are going after greener solutions. Toyota has left the idea of Tacoma diesel pickup.
2021 Nissan Frontier Redesign
The new look for the new Frontier. The truck is not going to be the US version of the Navara since it is getting a unique chassis. On the other hand, the platform remains the same. So, dimensions are going to be very similar. Well, the Frontier is the only truck available under $20,000. Chiefs already said that development of the new architecture could cost a lot, and it would increase the final price of the pickup. But, the aging F-Alpha concept is not capable to compete with new arrivals. Nissan will have to figure something out to keep the Frontier competitive in the market that grows again.
We can hear a lot of rumors about the fully-electric trucks. Tesla is, of course, the loudest one and the company we expect the most. Elon Musk said this vehicle is a priority for the next release. Rivian also brought an interesting concept. It is just a matter of time when will Ford add the EV version of the legendary F-150. We must not forget Nissan. The best-selling EV comes from this carmaker (Leaf). Also, the company is about to develop a new electric SUV, and a similar drivetrain could be used for the pickup truck. As the smaller brother, we would rather see it for 2021 Nissan Frontier, than for the new Titan.
2021 Nissan Frontier Release Date
The new 2021 Nissan Frontier is coming next year. The new NAIAS is going to be held in summer and it is perfect timing to release the new truck for 2021 season. With most other rivals already out with new models, the all-new Frontier will have a clear path to draw the attention of truckers that follow the largest auto show in the world.
