2021 VW Atlas Tanoak New Details

Volkswagen is still weighing options and decision about the 2021 VW Atlas Tanoak is not final yet. The pickup truck segment is expanding, the company has a good reputation outside US and cool concept for the major stage. All in all, the Atlas-based pickup is a good idea, but the carmaker is still suffering from the recent scandal.

VW is going on. They already refreshed the SUV lineup and now it is turn for the new projects. The 2021 VW Atlas Tanoak is something new, since the German manufacturer doesn’t want just to carry over Amarok to the United States.

There are a lot of questions, many pros and cons, so Volkswagen chiefs need some time to approve the production of the Atlas Tanoak. The concept we saw a couple of years ago is more than cool, with some advanced solutions which can be modern even now. Still, the drivetrain options and towing capacities must respond to capabilities by other units in this segment.

2021 VW Atlas Tanoak Specs and Towing Capacity

The truck appeared more than two years ago at the NY Auto Show. Back then, the German carmaker made clear that a 3.6-liter V6 engine is going to produce 275 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque. Not many things changed in the mid-size truck class recently, so this unit would be competitive. The pickup will accelerate 0-60 mph in just 8 seconds. Still, the company is not unveiling towing capacities. The truck must get to 7,000 pounds to be considered as a working machine. The body-on-frame platform underpins the pickup. The 4Motion AWD is going to be optional.

The 2021 VW Atlas Tanoak will be based on the SUV with the same name. But, a few things will make it special, including a 2-inch lift. Thanks to this, pickup will be able to tow more. Also, off-road capabilities are going to be better. LED strips on the front fascia, large air vents, and unique wheels are highlights of the upcoming truck.

Well, the production model will be was different from the concept we saw in 2018. Nevertheless, some features, such as four-door layout and seating capacity for five persons stay the same. The touchscreen infotainment display is at the center of the dashboard. In this segment, the updates are happening more frequently. The latest features will be there, and Volkswagen is even thinking about Level 4 autonomous drive.

Release Date and Price

It’s a tricky one. The concept seemed to be production-ready two years ago. Even we had a chance to drive test mules. But then, VW is pretty silent. They are not announcing the production and there is no news about the Atlas Tanoak. Meanwhile, Ford brought back Ranger and Jeep launched Gladiator. With a V6 engine and modern styling, the 2021 VW Atlas Tanoak is not going to cost under $26,000. Some companies are using a four-cylinder as the base engine to offer more affordable trucks. Volkswagen could do the same with Atlas Tanoak. Still, it is likely to see the German carmaker delivering a hybrid or all-electric platform based on the ID concept.
