Honda sticks to its ideas. Although the Ridgeline is the slowest-selling pickup in the US, the Japanese company is not going to change the platform and switch it to the body on the frame. The truck is the only model using the unibody architecture, which is something that draws buyers away. But, the 2022 Honda Ridgeline Type R could lure them back and think about the performance edition of the pickup as the cool ride.
With the arrival of the Type S models for Acura vehicles, we are getting the idea of what could power the 2022 Honda Ridgeline Type R. A 3.0-liter turbo unit is a perfect addition and the upgrade compared to the existing 3.5-liter natural-six engine. Besides the power enhancement, the truck is getting advanced technology for safety and infotainment, while unique details are going to be applied to the exterior and interior.
2022 Honda Ridgeline Type R Specs
So, we finally got a clue about the engine. That could be the same one buyers are getting when buying Acura MDX Type S. A 3.0-liter unit is turbocharged and delivers 355 hp and 355 lb-ft of torque. Still, we can’t compare speed tests to the SUV, since the pickup is going to be heavier and it will consume more fuel, especially if you are towing. We expect to see a hauling capacity of about 6,000 pounds. The truck is going to use special suspension and shocks. The 2022 Honda Ridgeline Type R might also enhance the off-road capabilities of the base edition, providing more 4×4 fun.
Expectations and Verdict
Type R is the flagship model. Still, Honda is not offering this package on many models. But, the truck would be a stunning project which can draw the attention of the Japanese company and all its products. After five seasons, the pickup needs the update, and there is hardly anything better than the 2022 Honda Ridgeline Type R. With the Type S becoming part of the Acura lineup, we can also expect the same with Honda’s big rigs – Ridgeline truck and Pilot SUV.
On the other hand, the company has bigger and louder plans. That is the plug-in hybrid system. While there are no clues about Type R, we already saw the prototypes of the Pilot PHEV. That is discouraging fans from the belief that performance truck could be here next season. Plus, such models are not popular in this segment. Acura MDX Type S is going toe-to-toe with German luxury SUVs. Truckers are keener on off-road upgrades, rather than the performance. Ranger Raptor, Gladiator Rubicon, Colorado ZR2, Tacoma TRD Pro. Honda would have to go after this class, but the first thing their pickup need is a whole different architecture.
Price, Release Date
So, the 2022 Honda Ridgeline Type R is not so likely to happen as the production model. But, the performance truck might arrive as the concept and prototype. The price is not going to be under $45,000 for sure, and possibly even higher. Before this happens, we could see the plug-in hybrid unit, which is already being tested on the Pilot SUV.
