After a huge scandal, Volkswagen is restoring its image in the US market. Well, the process is not going bad and the company is expanding the portfolio. Not only existing classes are getting refreshed models, but the company is going to explore new segments. You’ve probably heard of ID electric platform. But, our topic is the 2022 VW Tarok, the new pickup truck concept.
Those two could be related, by the way. But, for starters, the company is going to deliver a new model during next year. It is a bit of a surprise. For a long time, the Atlas Tanoak was the truck concept that was anticipated as the next US pickup. But, after a few seasons, even before the production started, we got a new idea – the 2022 VW Tarok. Experts immediately started speculating about its US release date.
The Tarok is the new platform, presented by the Brazilian department of the German giant. Well, it debuted only a few months after the premiere of VW Atlas Tanoak. But then, again a few months later, the Tarok arrived in North America during New York Auto Show. Then, the COVID-19 pandemic started and all projects were put on idle. Now, the development continues and the 2022 VW Tarok might debut soon as the production vehicle.
2022 VW Tarok Truck Specs and Towing Capacity
At the premiere of the pickup in Brazil, the company announced that the vehicle is going to use a 2.0-liter turbodiesel engine. For the mid-size truck, 150 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque are enough. But, diesel is a problem for North America and the pickup is definitely not going to offer an oil burner, although other manufacturers are not scared of exploring this market.
Another option was a 1.4-liter turbocharged petrol unit. A four-banger is going to deliver between 160 and 170 horsepower and around 190 lb-ft of torque. This is a more likely option if the truck hits US dealerships. Also, we can check other vehicles in this market and find a 2.0-liter turbo-four. In this case, buyers will get 185 ponies and 200 pound-feet. The most powerful configuration would be a V6. Atlas SUV develops 275 hp and 260 lb-ft, which would make the 2022 VW Tarok competitive with the likes of Chevy Colorado, Toyota Tacoma, and Ford Ranger.
2022 VW Tarok Release Date and Price
The MSRP mainly depends on the engine. But, the German company will try to make the truck competitive, which means the price will start around $23,000. It might drop even further if a 1.4-liter engine becomes an entry-level choice. A V6 will make it more expensive. Such a configuration is going to start from $27,000 and depending on options, finish above $35,000. We’ll know more by the end of the year and early in 2022. The Tarok might become official in a few months. The COVID-19 pandemic is still hitting hard and don’t be surprised if another delay happens.
