Frontier is the cheapest truck in the US market. However, most truckers will skip the base version with the four-cylinder engine and choose a more capable V6. But, it seems not to be enough, since the truckmaker is losing the pace in the mid-size market. Maybe the 2021 Nissan Frontier Diesel could fix the situation?
The new generation of the pickup will come soon. Experts are still trying to figure out if the next Frontier is appearing as 2021 or 2022 YM. Either way, if the diesel engine appears, it will overshadow the redesign and the new look. With all these changes, the 2021 Nissan Frontier Diesel could become a true competitor to Chevy Colorado, Toyota Tacoma, and Ford Ranger.
The Rise of Diesel Engines
For a long time, the only diesel engine available in the pickup market was a 2.8-liter Duramax under the hoods of Chevy Colorado or GMC Canyon. Now, the new Jeep Gladiator comes with a mighty 3.0-liter displacement, which was previously launched on the full-size Ram 1500. Its biggest rivals, Chevy Silverado and Ford F-150 also got a similar configuration, and all a sudden, the truck market is full of diesel units.
Japanese manufacturers are not competitive here. But, Nissan had a representative in Titan XD. However, the company removed this unit from the 2020 lineup. So, the rumors about the 2021 Nissan Frontier Diesel are somehow confusing. On the other hand, to stay competitive, the truckmaker will have to make radical and brave moves.
2021 Nissan Frontier Diesel Specs
It is not easy to predict what kind of a diesel powertrain the new Frontier could use. Well, its siblings for the rest of the world, Navara, is one of the most popular models. It uses a couple of drivetrains which could be modified for the US market.
A 2.3-liter and 2.5-l displacements are not as big as existing mills in this segment. But, with turbochargers, these units might satisfy the needs of US truckers.
Another option is a new unit, but this is an expensive project. Well, if it pays off to other companies, Nissan might do the same to its Frontier. They will already spend a lot on the development of a new generation and a diesel engine would make it even more competitive.
2021 Nissan Frontier Diesel Verdict
The company sold 72k Frontiers last season. That is low for the last four years. Well, fans heard rumors about the new generation, so it could be a reason for the slow down. But, Toyota sold 250,000 Tacomas, and there are more than 120,000 new owners of Chevy Colorado. Nissan has to do a lot of things to catch up with the competition.
The diesel engine is key. Not only that the new mill will boost outputs of the truck, but it will also show the intention to compete. The Japanese carmaker announced big changes for 2021 in all areas and segments. Chiefs were not precise, but they mentioned more hybrid units. If the Nissan goes greener, then we probably won’t see Frontier diesel. But, it is more likely to happen than a hybrid, to be honest.
