The 2022 GMC Canyon Diesel is a mechanical twin of the Chevy Colorado. Duramax oil burner is making this truck the most capable machine in the mid-size segment. Towing capacity is 7,700 pounds and no other model (besides Colorado) can match the hauling potential. A 2.8-liter engine lays under the bonnet and it is an alternative to a couple of petrol units. Serious truckers are not going to consider a 2.5-liter four-cylinder mill, but a 3.6-liter V6 is also a pretty good option for a working truck.
If you want a diesel engine, you will have to pay around $6,500 more than for the base model. Compared to V6 petrol, oil burner is a $5,000 investment. Duramax engine is available only for Crew Cab pickup, no matter what’s the size of a bed. Also, the 2022 GMC Canyon Diesel can’t be purchased in the Standard package. Elevation is the entry-level version, AT4 is an off-road specialist, while the Denali is offering premium equipment. In some configurations, diesel is available only with a 4×4 system.
2022 GMC Canyon Diesel Specifications
A 2.8-liter displacement is a well-known Duramax product. It is a four-cylinder turbodiesel tuned to deliver 181 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission sends power to rear wheels by default, and you can upgrade the ride to AWD for $3,500. The gas mileage is one of the reasons why this diesel truck is so popular. You can get 20/30 mpg with 2WD, or 19/28 with 4WD. Compared to petrol displacements, it is a serious upgrade. A smaller four-pot mill is good for 19/25, while a larger engine returns 18/24 miles per gallon in city/on the highway. Towing capacity is 7,700 pounds. Only Jeep Gladiator can get close to this number with its diesel configuration.
Diesel vs Petrol Engines
We already mentioned a couple of good reasons why you should be after the 2022 GMC Canyon Diesel, rather than one of the gasoline engines. Towing capacity is probably the most important for truckers. Better mileage is a bonus. Who doesn’t want a truck that gives you more (towing capacity) and takes less (fuel)?
But, not everything is so perfect. Diesel engine costs a lot more. It will take a lot of miles before it covers a $5,000 investment. Many truckers will be happy with 7,000 pounds of towing capacity. Furthermore, there are emissions that put all oil burners future under the question mark. And finally, the maintenance will cost more.
Price and Competition
The 2022 GMC Canyon Diesel is available at $40,000 for the Crew Cab, Short Bed, and Elevation configuration. Loaded with 4WD and Denali trim level, the price tops $50,000. The Duramax engine is perfect for off-road adventures, so our recommendation is the AT4 model. It is available with cloth and leather interior and the MSRP is pretty reasonable.
If you are fan of diesel trucks, in the mid-size segment, there is only the Jeep Gladiator with an oil burner. However, it uses a larger 3.0-liter mill. We also expect Ford to bring a diesel for its Ranger, which is available in other markets. Nissan and Toyota are sticking to petrol engines.
