We already discussed the differences between diesel and hybrid trucks. The future is electric and Toyota was never hiding it. While the American truckmakers were spending funds into development of diesel pickups, the Japanese company was testing a hybrid. And the result is the new I Force engine. The 2024 Toyota Tundra hybrid is one of the vehicles that will use it in the I Force Max configuration.
The base version is a pure petrol unit. Engineers downsized the powertrain and the old V8 is no longer available. Too bad – it was one of the most reliable and durable plants in the market. But, the turbocharged V6 seems pretty capable as well. Plus, it supports hybrid boost for the I Force Max version. With it, the truck will maximize power and torque. But, not everything is about that, but also the towing capacity has a very important role. So, let’s check what the 2024 Toyota Tundra hybrid looks like.
Specs
The hybrid version of the truck is the I Force Max. That is a 3.4-liter turbocharged petrol engine with six cylinders that develops 437 horsepower. Of course, thanks to a hybrid support that also boosts torque to 583 lb-ft of torque. Serious outputs convert to the towing capacity. The new 2024 Toyota Tundra Hybrid can tow up to 11,450 pounds. That is at the same level as diesel versions of Ram 1500 and Silverado 1500 pickups. The gas mileage can be between 19 and 22 mpg, depending on the package you pick. Those are big upgrades compared to the previous version with a V8 engine.
2024 Toyota Tundra Hybrid vs Standard Configuration
The I Force is the new system that powers all the big vehicles by the Japanese carmaker. For the Tundra truck, the base system is without an electric motor. The difference between the 2024 Toyota Tundra Hybrid and the entry-level I Force are minor, but some people notice that petrol unit alone can tow more. The hauling rating is 12,000 lbs. The gas mileage is also pretty good, 20 mpg combined. Outputs of a 3.4-liter turbo engine are 389 hp and 479 lb-ft. In both configurations, a new 10-speed automatic transmission is standard and it sends power to the rear axle. A four-wheel drive consumes more fuel.
Competition
There are no new trucks in the half-ton segment for some while. Tundra’s rivals are the same for years – Ford F-150, Ram 1500, Chevy Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500 and Nissan Titan. But, none of them can compete with the 2024 Toyota Tundra Hybrid. General Motors launched the Hummer fully-electric truck and Silverado EV concept, while Ford F-150 EV is called Lighting. But, the US truckmakers are not developing hybrid systems, since those will be overcome soon.
Toyota is on the way to electrification. However, Tundra is not going to get the EV version in the foreseeable future. Instead, Toyota is focusing on the smaller Tacoma, whose electric version concept already debuted. Anyway, the release date is not set yet, so you can expect it beyond 2025.
