Expectations are still high. Many things are in doubt for the next couple of seasons. One of them is the next-gen 2022 Chevy Colorado. We already wrote about it when the plans leaked back in 2017. Also, the situation was promising and the truck was supposed to come out even earlier. Nevertheless, the COVID-19 outburst spoiled the situation and we might not see the new Colorado in 2022.
Colorado is the best-selling pickup truck. For a long time, it offers a diesel engine, which makes it special. However, the competition is close in this market now. Also, the styling is quite old and the new model will end a 10-year career of the current generation. The ZR2 is one of the best off-road packages and it definitely comes back for the 2022 Chevy Colorado. However, all of these parts need an update if Chevrolet doesn’t want the same thing to happen to its mid-size model, like for the flagship Silverado. Ram 1500 sells better and GM is not the main rival to Ford F-150 anymore.
2022 Chevy Colorado Redesign
It is definitely time for the new look. The mid-size truck might use the same styling as for the latest Silverado that entered a new generation a couple of years ago. Still, the smaller truck will need a unique approach, but the refresh is the starting point if GM wants to keep current fans and lure more buyers. The same should happen with the GMC Canyon.
Electric Trucks are Priority
“Our electric future is now” is the new motto of General Motors. The first EV vehicle they introduced is the 2022 Hummer truck. Nevertheless, the 2022 Chevy Colorado might also get a similar treatment, delivering a kind of hybrid unit. The PHEV can enhance power and gas mileage, making the ZR2 package even meaner. We won’t write off chances of seeing a fully-electric pickup with the bow-tie badge on the grille.
Diesel Stays
Although GM is becoming a greener company, engineers will keep a diesel unit. It made the pickup so popular. Also, it is one of the best models from this category if you want to tow a lot. A 2.8-liter Duramax is a turbo-four engine with 200 hp and 370 lb-ft of torque, which is enough for 7,700 pounds of towing. Other options are naturally-aspirated four-cylinder and V6 gasoline powerplants. The first one might be dropped, while the second one is definitely coming back for the 2022 Chevy Colorado.
2022 Chevy Colorado Launching Date
This one is now in doubt. We were sure that the truck is going to debut early in 2021. Now, the whole process is under the question mark and the company is not sending any hints about the new generation. The 2022 Chevy Colorado definitely needs changes, since the mid-size pickup segment is currently one of the hottest classes in the automotive market. New arrivals, more diesel units, upcoming electric and hybrid changes, make all the companies go forward. Colorado, as a vehicle with most fans and buyers, should make a statement with the next-gen styling and powertrains.
