General Motors is not confirming the new generation of its mid-size trucks. The COVID-19 outburst changed plans. Also, the competition is preparing small city pickups, so GM had to respond to this challenge as well. Meanwhile, the new 2023 GMC Canyon was spotted with updated off-road equipment. We can hear that the new version will be called the AT4X. Besides the 4×4 specialized truck, there are also several other very cool configurations.
The company will have to fix a few things on the new 2023 GMC Canyon. Elevation Standard and Elevation trim levels can easily confuse buyers. The price won’t go down, making the Canyon the high-end option in the mid-size pickup market. But, the interior is not reflecting that. On the other hand, the truck will make it up with a class-leading towing capacity. Equipped with Duramax diesel, the Canyon can haul 7,700 pounds.
2023 GMC Canyon AT4X
The AT4 is already one of the best off-road packages in this segment. But, the company is ready to make another step and build a more distinctive truck. The 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X was on the streets when spy photographers took a few photos of the upcoming model. Camouflage all over the pickup is hiding a lot, but it is also telling you that big changes are under the covers. That implies the next-gen is on the way. It is about time, since the current version of the Canyon, as well as the Chevrolet Colorado, is around for more than 10 years. A few details unveiled that AT4 is the spied prototype. Wrangler wheels and suspension height are things characteristic for the off-road package. Plus, larger fenders were also visible.

New Generation Is Coming
General Motors had big plans for 2021. But, the COVID-19 pandemic spoiled scheduled releases. Now, models are slowly coming back in the forefront. The 2023 GMC Canyon will start a new generation of the mid-size pickup truck after 10 years in service of the current version. Spied test mule is still a prototype and there will be many changes on the body and under the hood. This is not the only new truck we’ll see by the GM, since the all-electric Hummer EUT is also coming already in 2022.
2023 GMC Canyon New Engine, Diesel Still an Option
According to our sources in the company, General Motors is shaking things up under the hood of the next-gen pickup truck. Both 2023 GMC Canyon and Chevy Colorado will drop both petrol engines. Instead of a 2.5-liter four-cylinder and 3.6-liter V6, the truck will get power only from a turbo-four unit. A 2.7-liter displacement can provide 310 hp and 295 lb-ft. It performs well in the Silverado, and mid-size trucks are way lighter.
The Duramax diesel will still be there. A 2.8-liter turbo-four is ready to burst 200 hp and 370 lb-ft of torque. More important, this drivetrain can tow 7,700 pounds, more than any other pickup in the segment. But, the competition is not staying still. The new Tacoma is coming, and Ford is upgrading the Ranger lineup.
