Sierra will again be one of the competitors in the truck market. Mechanical twin of Chevy Silverado is offering a different styling and options. The 2023 GMC Sierra is the nameplate we’ll meet in the full-size and heavy-duty segments. In the future, the company might upgrade the lineup with Series 4 and 5 models.
Still, the most popular 2023 GMC Sierra truck is going to be a half-ton Sierra 1500. Vehicles from this class achieve the best sales numbers. But, serious truckers will set sights on the more potent Series 2 and 3 models, with a V8 Duramax turbodiesel. The Sierra 3500 is one of the best haulers in the market. Finally, Sierra 4500 and 5500 are about to debut, borrowing the platform from Silverado Series 4 and 5 models, bringing back old nameplates – Kodiak and TopKick.
2023 GMC Sierra 1500: Serious Changes
General Motors is in crisis. Ram 1500 is now the second best-selling truck in the US, overtaking the #2 spot from the Chevy Silverado. GM will do its best to keep up with FCA’s pickup, as well as its archrival, Ford F-150. The 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 should benefit from this race as well, as the Silverado’s mechanical twin. We still don’t know what does the company prepares, but changes need to be bold.
A diesel engine remains a cool option for the half-ton truck. We recommend pairing it with the AT4 package, specialized for the off-road drive. If you are looking for premium features, Sierra Denali packs the latest technology, such as Super Cruise system and Multi-Pro tailgate. The truck is also using two very powerful V8 engines. A performance version is not in the plan yet. Silverado might deploy a supercharged 6.2-liter mill to compete with Ram Rebel TRX and Ford Raptor R.
2023 GMC Sierra HD Class: 2500 and 3500 Trucks
Changes in the heavy-duty class are not so frequent. So, you can expect to see the 2023 GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 the same as for the 2022 season. A V8 petrol engine is new and serves as the base configuration. But, most truckers will go after a 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel, capable of producing high torque. When you convert 450 hp and 910 lb-ft of torque, you can get a towing capacity of nearly 36,000 pounds. Further improvements will push the hauling potential even higher. Special upgrades, such as dual-rear-wheel, are required for the maximum performance. Nevertheless, even the base setup will be good enough to help you carry the entire cargo.
Does GMC Make 4500 and 5500 Trucks?
For now, we don’t have light-duty trucks with the GMC badge. However, the company could easily rebadge the Silverado 4500 and 5500 models. We see a similar outcome in the Sierra HD squad. But, those working mules are not going to offer too many fancy options. Chassis cab is standard, while there are no off-road specialists and premium packages, such as AT4 and Denali. On the other hand, the question if General Motors needs more models in this segment. We doubt, but there are fans still looking forward to see 2023 GMC TopKick or Kodiak.
