2023 Toyota Trucks Preview: Models and Changes

The upcoming season will be pretty big for the Japanese carmaker. The 2023 Toyota trucks lineup is changing. In 2022, we’ll see the new engine for the Tundra. Having this in mind, we expect something big for the Tacoma as well. Outside the US, Hilux is one of the most popular pickups. Those three make Toyota the biggest truckmaker in the world.

Besides engines, the company is about to introduce other changes. Tundra is new for the 2022 YM. After that, minor updates are coming. So, it leaves more room for the work on Tacoma and its non-US counterpart, Hilux. Here is what you can expect.

2023 Toyota Tundra – Unchanged

It didn’t take too long from concept to the production – the iForce Max is the new engine for the 2023 Toyota Tundra. A V8 was big and old, very thirsty powertrain. Its capability kept the full-size pickup competitive. But, the market is evolving, and now drivetrains with fewer cylinders can do the same as eight-pot units. The twin-turbo V6 can provide up to 440 horsepower, which is more than a 5.7-liter plant can do. Plus, it consumes less fuel. Those are the reasons why the expectations are high.

Rumors are mentioning the 2023 Toyota Tundra Diesel again. However, we still believe this is not likely to happen. The Japanese company is turning to greener sources of power, and it is a matter of time when will non-US models cut oil burners from their lineups.

2023 Toyota Tacoma – Redesign or Carry-Over?

Tacoma is the best-selling mid-size truck in the US. But, the competition is growing and now there are more rivals. We don’t think Toyota worry about Hyundai Santa Cruz, for now. But, Ford Ranger is a reason to plan updates on the 2023 Toyota Tacoma. Like for Tundra, diesel is not likely. But, a hybrid, or even the all-electric configurations are something that won’t surprise us. The company is already delivering bug SUVs with such drivetrains. It is just a matter of time when the truck segment is about to be electrified.

The 2023 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro should get a new version. This is the most capable off-road truck that will be ready to compete with Chevy Colorado ZR2, and eventually the Ford Ranger Raptor. The base model is ready for the update. The last dose of modification occurred in 2020.

2023 Toyota Hilux

The 2023 Toyota Hilux is not available in the US. Well, it is Tacoma for the rest of the world. Still, the Hilux uses diesel engines, which are quite popular in Europe and Asia. Instead of the TRD upgrades, you can find Rugged package, or if you are from Australia, the Invincible off-road model. A 2.4-liter diesel might be out of production soon, leaving a 2.7-liter petrol as the only option. If Tacoma gets a hybrid powertrain, the 2023 Toyota Hilux will also use the same setup. This truck is going to face a similar competition like its US sibling – Ford Ranger, Nissan Navara (Frontier), but also the Mitsubishi L200, Mazda BT-50, Isuzu D-Max, VW Amarok.
