Many truckers would like to see the new gearbox for Dodge Ram heavy-duty trucks. Rumors about the 2024 Ram HD Allison transmission are lauder, since the update of this system and all the benefits it brings for the GM trucks. But, the switch is not so simple and the AISIN gearbox could be improved as well. There are a lot of options and the company is not unveiling plans.
The transmission switch will improve the efficiency of the Dodge Ram HD lineup. That is the main issue with Cummins diesel unit under the bonnet of Ram 2500 and 3500 models. But, a lot of obstacles are waiting. The ZF will fight for the place in the lineup, and most Cummins plants are mated to this gearbox. The rumors are floating for a long time, but no one brought any clue about it.
Allison Transmissions
The Allison system pairs Duramax engines available on the GM trucks. The battle between two manufacturers is epic, and we can find a lot of speculations about the switch, not only from Aisin to Allison, but also vice versa. Now, the Allison 10-speed case is upgraded and makes a difference for Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD models. Those trucks are now leaders in the towing capacity. So, the reports about Ram switching to this system are more intense.
General Motors improved the transmission, but it also holds rights of using it. But, we can also hear rumors that bosses are ready to listen to the offers. Nevertheless, everything is still far-fetched from this point of view.
Allison vs AISIN
Of course, there are pros and cons. The 2024 Ram HD Allison transmission would shake things up, but fans of the ZF case won’t be glad to hear their favorite options are gone. For example, AISIN box brings a more explosive start in the first gear. On the other hand, Allison and lower sixth gear improves mileage. Another important detail is the size of Allison system. Larger model harms fuel economy, but such setups are usually more durable. Well, the mileage is not too important for the HD segment, where EPA doesn’t deliver official reports.
2024 Ram HD Allison Transmission Specs
The new transmission is going to be paired with a mighty Cummins engine. It delivers 400 horsepower and 1,000 lb-ft of torque. The AISIN system still handles it nicely, but experts believe the Allison configuration can do it better. The outputs are important, but truckers look to maximize towing capacity. Again, Ram HD can do 35,000 pounds, but GM trucks are ahead of the competition, thanks to the new gearbox. Some say that 2024 Ram HD Allison transmission can do even 40,000 pounds. Sooner or later, heavy-duty trucks will be able to do this amount of cargo.
On the other hand, the price will go up. If it gets the job done, truckers are willing to pay. We will know more about it during 2023, since the switch is called off for the upcoming season.
That was not a definite answer. Will ram 2500 get an allison transmission or not?
Last time I checked, Ram split from Dodge in 2010 and production was moved to ex Chrysler production plants. Dodge has had nothing to do with the 4th & 5th Gen Rams.
