Things are warming up in the truck segment. We have new generations of half-ton pickups, the mid-size segment is revived, and refresh expect the HD lineup. It seems like the Dodge Rampage 2006 Concept could head into production as well. But, what would it bring to Ram and FCA?
The Dodge Rampage 2006 Concept is showing a coupe-like sporty truck. It rides on a unibody platform. The only other existing truck that uses the same architecture is Honda Ridgeline. And it is not even close the best-selling working mules. So, why would FCA risk with Rampage?
Extended lineup means more buyers. Versatility brings popularity as well. Furthermore, the truckmaker has nothing to lose. They have an existing concept (which is outdated a bit, though). Still, there is a lot of usable material to pick from the Rampage concept. This platform could launch the popularity of sporty truck to stardoms.
Unibody Trucks Have no Chance
Well, the current situation is not bright for the Dodge Rampage 2006 Concept. The unibody architecture is not what most truckers expect. Yes, vehicles are lighter and handling is much better, but pickups are towing machines and their frame needs to be durable. That is exactly what Toyota Tacoma, Chevy Colorado, and others are offering.
On the other hand, we have a crossover/SUV category of vehicles. Here, we can find models that are capable to tow as much as trucks. But, safety, infotainment, comfort, and many other things are better. This class is responsible for discontinuations of other vehicles. Trucks are still fighting off their versatility by offering better solutions for towing of larger cargo.
Dodge Rampage 2006 Concept – Sporty Coupe Truck
Honda Ridgeline is attractive. But, the sportier Rampage concept comes with something special – coupe cabin. We can’t find examples of such configurations for ages. This design could draw the attention of younger buyers and find a way to their hearts. On the other hand, everything is pretty risky. Another good thing is that other companies are not offering anything similar, even as concept vehicles.
Dodge Rampage 2006 Concept Drivetrain
The platform we saw in 2006 used a 5.7-liter V8 petrol engine with 360 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque. Well, as time passed, FCA deployed different powertrains. Now we can find some high-output V6 units that can achieve even better outputs. Still, the 5.7-l Hemi unit is still in use, and we believe that the company will stick to the initial plan. A 6.4-liter V8 is another possibility, as well as a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel turbocharged V6 drivetrain.
When We Could See Dodge Rampage In Production?
The time was never better for the Dodge Rampage 2006 Concept to get into production. The truck market has revived and more and more mid-size models are being sold. Buyers will look for other possibilities and new arrivals. The sporty coupe pickup will definitely refresh the market. On the other hand, there are no guarantees it can succeed. Well, the mid-size segment is finally recovering after nearly 10 years. Meanwhile, we saw a lot of models being discontinued, and now comeback rumors are pretty loud, especially about the Dodge Dakota.
