El Camino – one of the most intriguing tracks of all time. Well, it’s been over 30 years since it was discontinued, but fans still remember it. Some of the younger enthusiasts still believe that 2020 Chevy El Camino is coming.
Well, the rumors are there, but the odds of happening are not so likely. Speculations go so far that we can read some reports of SS model. I mean – come on!
Still, it would be nice to see the El Camino back. But, the question is – where does it fit? Silverado is covering the full-size and heavy-duty segment, while Colorado is the best mid-size model. Compact trucks are not popular anymore, although Ford is building a new one (read more about Courier concept and see spy photos). Also, there are GMC twins, with premium Denali package.
Concept and Styling
The sporty truck based on a car architecture can’t survive nowadays. Well, back in the late 80s that was a cause why most companies left this segment. The new, more practical pickups appeared, with tasks to tow. Body-on-frame platforms overtook this market. Now, with the dominance of SUVs, their utility is the only thing that keeps the pickup segment alive.
The GM could test the market again with a unibody concept and the sportier pickup. The only model of this kind available in the US is the Honda Ridgeline. Well, the 2020 Chevy El Camino would be interesting because of its name and history. On the other hand, true truckers are not taking this segment too seriously.
2020 Chevy El Camino SS Model
Rumors about the SS truck are louder than ever. Even if the base model doesn’t appear, there is a chance for the SuperSport version to become available in a limited number of copies. The only SS model currently in Chevrolet’s lineup is Camaro. If the truck gets the same drivetrain, it would be a 6.2-liter supercharged engine with capability to deliver 450 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque. Yes, there is a 650-hp rated ZL1 tuning, which is not so likely for the El Camino.
Off-Road Platform
Another possibility for the 2020 Chevy El Camino is to take the position in the off-road segment and rival Ford Raptor and upcoming Ram Rebel TRX. According to rumors, this model is being tested. There are few possible nameplates for it – Silverado 1500 ZR2, Chevrolet Reaper, and the El Camino is the latest title in the mix. Reaper concept is becoming quite old and besides visual and engineering updates, the truck could get a new name.
2020 Chevy El Camino Price and Release Date
The new 2020 Chevy El Camino could arrive next season as the limited edition. The standard truck behind this nameplate is not so likely to happen any time soon. As we said, there is no room in the GM lineup currently.
On the other hand, the mid-size pickup segment is pretty popular nowadays. The expansion is possible, and that is the chance the El Camino is waiting for. The price of the new model will depend on the engine and its size. If the SS model steps into the market, expect the premium MSRP for the performance-oriented truck.
