The 2020 Ford Super Duty segment is the most profitable segment in this company. So, it is not strange why this class is evolving every year. Well, there is a hold up right now. It is time for F-150 to shine. But, in next couple of years, we could see some significant changes in Ford’s heavy-duty class. One of the most interesting will be a new engine.
Their legendary light-duty pickup truck got the diesel for next year. So, Ford Super Duty is waiting for the situation to calm down about it. Only then the big trucks will cause an earth-shaking effect with novelties and debuts. It hasn’t been a while since all pickups in the heavy-duty class were redesigned. In 2017, F-250, F-350, and F-450 got a new look. Now, it is time for mechanical updates, and the 2020 Ford Super Duty 7.0 engine could be even bigger than facelift from 2017.
Ford Super Duty 7.0 Engine Specs
Currently, the 2020 Ford Super Duty lineup is using one petrol and one diesel engine. The turbodiesel mill is the class-leading powertrain. It can produce 450 hp and 935 lb-ft of torque. For example, Chevy Silverado and GMC HD trucks are delivering less power (5 hp). On the other hand, Ram matches horsepower output, but their HD trucks are 5 pound-feet short on the torque end.
Petrol unit is not so dominant. It is a 6.2-liter V-8 mill. However, this one is pretty potent with 380 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. But, Ford Super Duty trucks with this configuration can’t tow more than 17,000 pounds with 5th wheel configuration. Standard towing capacity is 16,000 lbs.
New Ford Super Duty 7.0 Engine Will Boost…Well, Everything
Engineers are preparing the new drivetrain for heavy-duty trucks. A Ford Super Duty 7.0 engine will improve horsepower rating and towing capacity. Well, it will still be far away from diesel and its hauling potential. Nevertheless, the company is developing this petrol unit, although there are no confirmations yet. We can expect the Ford Super Duty 7.0 engine to create around 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque. Towing capacity will go over 20,000 pounds.
2020 Super Duty New Transmission
Current Super Duty squad is using an old six-speed auto transmission. For the new engine, the company will bring a new pair. It is a 10-speed gearbox, but not the one we can find on F-150. Current transmission with 10 paces is 10R80. The heavy-duty segment will need a special edition. With or without Ford Super Duty 7.0 engine, big trucks will get a 10R140.
2020 Ford Super Duty to Produce 1,000 lb-ft?
The new transmission, according to plans and predictions, will be able to handle 1,030 pound-feet of torque. Well, the petrol engine is not going to be the one which will produce massive twisting power. But, the current diesel can burst 935 pound-feet. But, if the company develops the transmission that can route more, why to waste that potential?
After F-150 Can we see 2020 Ford Super Duty Hybrid Trucks
The most extreme rumors are going so far to speak about the hybrid engines for 2020 Super Duty trucks. Its smaller sibling, Ford F-150 is almost certain to get such power source. But, for the Super Duty lineup, this is not so likely. Even for a light-duty truck, it is not easy to develop the hybrid. In higher tier, the electric motor would improve fuel economy, but torque would remain the same, and some special features would be removed. If Ford is not planning something revolutionary, the hybrid engine for 2020 Super Duty trucks is not going to improve any major specs.
