FCA surprised everyone when the Ram 1500 introduced a diesel configuration. Everyone was talking about the Ford vs Chevrolet rivalry. All out of a sudden, there is Ram with EcoDiesel unit. The results were immediate, with more buyers purchasing the Ram 1500 and the pickup is now the second on the list of best-sellers, taking the spot from Silverado. A lot more is needed for 2022 Ram 1500 Diesel to catch up with Ford F-150 Powerstroke.
All three half-ton trucks by US companies are using similar configurations with small differences in power and torque outputs and towing capacities. The 2022 Ram 1500 Diesel will be on the same line as Ford, but the Blue Oval is still the most famous truckmaker in the world. The oil-burner will increase fuel economy and towing capacity, and that is the most important to buyers.
2022 Ram 1500 Diesel Specs
Under the bonnet of the pickup is a 3.0-liter six-cylinder EcoDiesel mill. The engine is good for 260 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque (highest in the class). Converted to the most important numbers – towing capacity – the 2022 Ram 1500 Diesel can do 12,560 pounds. The payload is 2,040 lbs. This is a significant upgrade from all the current petrol units. But, an even bigger boost is coming in the fuel economy. The EcoDiesel mill is going to return 21/30 mpg in the city/on the highway.
Competition
Since Toyota is out of this league definitely, with the Japanese company confirming there won’t be Tundra diesel, the 2022 Ram 1500 Diesel will have only two rivals. For a long time, we were watching a two-way game, but FCA is spoiling plans, especially to General Motors. The EcoDiesel unit is one of the reasons why Ram 1500 is more popular than the Chevy Silverado half-ton pickup. Another one is GM missing out on the higher performance. Their truck is towing less than 10,000 pounds.
On the other hand, the Ford F-150 is still a model to be beaten. It won’t happen in the foreseeable future. But, FCA means business. It already questioned the Raptor’s supremacy in the off-road segment with the Hellcat-powered TRX Rebel model. With 702 hp, it made Ford getting into action. The Raptor R is going to feature a supercharged Godzilla engine with 760 ponies.
In a diesel segment, we see similar outputs. Ford lacks some torque (440 lb-ft) but it still doesn’t affect towing capacity (12,000 pounds). The company is still not combining an oil burner with the Raptor package. But, if it happens, the Blue Oval truckmaker will cement its #1 spot in front of growing competition.
2022 Ram 1500 Diesel Prices
The 2022 Ram 1500 Diesel will be priced below its rivals, which is another big advantage. FCA sells its pickup for $37,000 in the base configuration. Most the trim levels are offering a diesel upgrade. Compared to the base Pentastar engine, the oil-burner is going to add about $5,000 above a gasoline mill.
