The new Ford F-150 diesel is using a Powerstroke 3.0 drivetrain. Although cooperation between these two companies dates back from 1994, this will make the company more famous than ever. Being a part of the number one truck on the market is a big deal. However, Power Stroke has various units in their fleet.
Probably the most famous is a Powerstroke 6.0 V8 drivetrain. In short period of time, it gained a lot of popularity thanks to the application in Ford Super Duty trucks. Besides this one and the brand new 3.0-liter unit, the Blue Oval company moved to Powerstroke 6.7 engine. It is a successor of a 6.0-liter mill in Super Duty segment.
Powerstroke 3.0
Under the hood of the brand-new Ford F-150 diesel is a Powerstroke 3.0 engine. The diesel unit is offering a strong performance with excellent specs and towing capacity. The legendary truck gains 250 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque. On the other hand, Chevy is using a Duramax powertrain with the same volume. Compared to Powerstroke 3.0, Silverado 1500 will get 10 pound-feet less on the torque output. Horsepower rating is the same. Ram 1500 is also coming with diesel unit for 2019 season. This truck will get a Cummins engine with 420 lb-ft of twisting power.
Powerstroke 6.0
Heavy duty segment of Ford trucks needs a beast under the hood. It was initially 7.3-liter unit, that was replaced with Powerstroke 6.0 in 2004. Besides Super Duty trucks, this engine created power for Excursion SUV. It lasted until 2010. Trucks with this drivetrain were able to deliver 325 hp and 60 pound-feet of torque. Tow and haul modes, new transmission, and HEUI direct-injection didn’t help this model cover all the problems it had. Engineers were unable to solve issues with oil cooler and high pressure in the system. So finally, the engine was discontinued.
Powerstroke 6.7
The current edition of Ford F-350 is using a huge 6.7-liter diesel powertrain. This unit is also in the plan for future models in Super Duty series. Whatsoever, the engine is capable to produce 440 horsepower. What is more impressing is the torque output. For a base variant, it is around 860 pound-feet. Electronic controls and other features can make this truck blast 925 lb-ft of torque. By default, Powerstroke 6.7 creates 390 hp and 735 lb-ft.
Compared to Cummins, that is 40 horses and 85 pound-feet more. On the other hand, Chevy Silverado HD diesel gets a Duramax 6.6-liter V-8 engine with more power. Tuning of this engine can help heavy-duty trucks to achieve 445 horses and 910 lb-ft of torque.
Other Versions and Applications
Ford Transit is using the Powerstroke 3.2 liter engine. In all other cases, this van wouldn’t be so important, but now it holds a special item. Its heart, Powerstroke drivetrain could be carried over to the brand-new 2019 Ford Ranger. Whatsoever, this truck is not going to be available in the US market. Buyers in Australia will get this mild version of Powerstroke diesel engine. With it, the upcoming Ranger is going to be able to produce 185 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque.
