Do not expect big changes in the 2021 VW Amarok, since the company is preparing the new generation for 2022. Still, we can hear that Volkswagen is testing some features on the model for the next season. Advanced technologies will be available and the pickup could make the prelude for the US release, either as Amarok or Atlas Tanoak.
What’s more, the German manufacturer is seriously expanding its electric range. We can see a lot of interesting concepts. Who knows, maybe in future they can launch the electric truck. But, the 2021 VW Amarok is not going to be the one. It will stick to the existing units we already know well.
2021 VW Amarok Specs
Amarok is pretty popular in the world, thanks to its reliable drivetrains. The main source of power remains a 2.0-liter petrol unit which charges 160 hp and 220 lb-ft of torque. Besides the four-cylinder units, Volkswagen is using a V6. In this case, a 3.6-liter displacement is ready to produce 275 hp and 260 lb-ft of twist. Towing capacity of this one is 7,000 pounds, which is an excellent output for a petrol unit.
The truck is also using a couple of diesel engines. Still, neither 2.0 TDI nor 3.0 TDI are going to appear in the US. Updated, the turbo-four can achieve 140-180 horsepower. The new configuration of the V6 Bluemotion diesel setup returns 270 hp and 430 pound-feet. The company also considered adding a V8 powerplant, but this is not so likely to happen. It is just too large for the mid-size segment.
Atlas Tanoak Will Debut in the US
The 2021 VW Amarok is a non-US model. Still, the company tries to enter the largest truck market in the world, but there are many obstacles. First, Volkswagen was hit with a diesel emission scandal. Now, the manufacturer is trying to restore the image. A pickup truck would definitely help them overcome a tough period.
However, it’s been a while since the new model was announced, and we still don’t know if it is going to appear in the United States as Amarok or Atlas Tanoak. But, in 2021 or 2022, the pickup should finally be launched. Concept looks like it is production-ready, and the US version can rely on the standard Amarok. The company probably waits for the new generation in a year or so to bring the Tanoak into the game.
2021 VW Amarok Competition
Experts believe the German company is the next one to enter the new market. The mid-size truck segment was the hottest class with arrivals of Jeep Gladiator and Ford Ranger. Amarok or Tanoak would make things even more interesting. Still, outside this market, the pickup also has serious rivals in Toyota Hilux and Nissan Navara (besides the Ranger who expects it in its homeland now). Also, there are more European manufacturers competing with Volkswagen here, such as Fiat with its Fullback, or Renault and its Alaskan pickup. Isuzu D-Max and Mitsubishi L200 are a couple of other interesting choices.
