The next generation of the popular truck is on the way. Mitsubishi is a player outside the US and one of its most popular vehicles is Triton truck. The pickup is capable to compete against Toyota Hilux, Nissan Navara, Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max. In some markets, you will find it with the L200 badge. However, that is the same vehicle with some different engine configurations. The 2022 Mitsubishi Triton Hybrid will be another key upgrade for the new generation, that will draw even more attention.
This is not just a rumor since the Japanese carmaker made a partnership with one of the leaders in this segment, Nissan. Eventually, both truckmakers will end up with hybrid models in the foreseeable future. Navara could introduce it even for the 2021 YM.
2022 Mitsubishi Triton Hybrid Specs
The truck is currently using only one petrol engine. Diesel configurations are way more attractive. European buyers can purchase some hybrids based on these powerplants, while all the setups in the US are using gasoline drivetrains. With the company’s intention to return to North America, the 2022 Mitsubishi Triton Hybrid based on a diesel unit would kill these hopes.
Still, the truck is very popular in the rest of the world, so it is a big decision for the manufacturer. There are three possible base engines for the 2022 Mitsubishi Triton Hybrid if it is going with a diesel powerplant. The lightest one is a 2.2 displacement and the most popular engine is a 2.5-liter. In some markets, you will find 2.4-liter turbo-four models.
A hybrid engine is going to enhance both power and fuel economy. On the other hand, the price is going up for sure. The only questionable thing about the 2022 Mitsubishi Triton Hybrid is if it can maintain the performance of its siblings. Well, this is the main reason why we are not seeing more trucks with such powertrains. Specs and capacities are unknown at this point and Mitsubishi will reveal pieces of information next season.
Release Date and Competition
The new 2022 Mitsubishi Triton Hybrid is not coming so soon. The carmaker will introduce a new generation of the truck for the 2021 season. A hybrid truck is the first update of the lineup. So, we might see it anywhere next year, or even in 2022, depending on the development. A lot of things will depend on Nissan since this company already uses hybrid technology on some of its vehicles. It is easier to upgrade the existing systems than to create and test new units. Either way, the process is complicating and it will take a lot of time before we see the first concepts.
If it is so easy, more trucks would use hybrid engines. At this point, we don’t have such projects in any country where Mitsubishi is selling Triton and L200. In the future, the situation is going to change. A few companies already announced works on these units. Of course, Ford and Toyota are leaders. But, we wouldn’t bet against the 2022 Mitsubishi Triton Hybrid. The Japanese company already stunned the market with the Outlander PHEV crossover SUV.
