Heavy-duty trucks are the great upgrade after the half-ton class. There is no too big choice. The 2023 GMC Sierra 2500HD is one of two General Motors’ models available in the series 2 segment. Its mechanical twin is the Chevy Silverado 2500. Other alternatives are Ford F-250 and Ram 2500. Some fans consider Nissan Titan XD as one of the cool alternatives. But, the Japanese model sits somewhere between heavy-duty and half-ton segments.
There are a few highlights and reasons why you should go after the 2023 GMC Sierra 2500HD. First of all, a mighty diesel engine is there. Nevertheless, not in its best form, which is reserved for the Sierra 3500HD model. Buyers can also choose between an off-road oriented AT4 package, and luxurious Denali trim. Other trucks are missing so many high-end options. That is where Sierra 2500 steps up compared to the competition.
Under the Hood
The 2023 GMC Sierra 2500HD is powered by a 6.6-liter V8 engine. General Motors replaced an old 6.0-liter mill with a larger and more efficient displacement. Still, the towing capacity is not impressive with 15,000 pounds. That is still better than the Sierra 1500 can do. The drivetrain creates 400 hp and 465 lb-ft. That is not a big deal compared to the 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel. It adds 45 horsepower, but the torque reaches 910 lb-ft. Converted to the towing capacity, the truck gets a boost. Still, 23,000 pounds is still far away from the top of the class rating from its Series 3 cousin. Equipped with dual rear wheel system and a few other upgrades, the engine reaches maximum towing capacity of 36,000 pounds.
We must mention one of the keys of the 2023 GMC Sierra 2500HD success. That is the new Allison transmission. The company recently updated the gearbox. Not only that system improves the performance of GM trucks, but it also draws the attention of the competition. While Ford continues to use old cases, Ram trucks might start getting Allison, instead of AISIN transmission.
Best Models
Buyers will have plenty of options to choose from. But, two models are above all others. The choice depends on buyer’s needs and preferences.
If you need a heavy-duty truck for towing across different and tough terrains, the 2023 GMC Sierra 2500HD AT4 is the best choice. The package equips the pickup with the 4×4 system and unique suspension setup. There are other special upgrades, such as skid plates, to extend durability, and bedliner, to protect items in the box. Interior also comes with a few premium options and AT4 badges all around the cabin.
But, the 2023 GMC Sierra 2500HD Denali has no match, not only in this lineup. This is a high-end package available for most GMC vehicles. Instead of focusing on capabilities and performance, the Denali package brings plenty of premium equipment and advanced technology. Leather seats are standard, all are heated, and front buckets are ventilated. MultiPro tailgate and Trailering camera system are the latest features and GM is making those available only for high-end trims.
